What should I expect from a session?
A session is one-on-one with the dog and its owner or owners, and is usually between 50-60 minutes. The length of the session can vary depending on the dog, the owner, and the situation. I typically begin a session by having a brief conversation with the owner about his or her training expectations, including desired behavior or specific concerns. Then I want to observe the dog's existing behavior and interaction with its owner(s). I prefer to have the session at a location where the unwanted behavior takes place (e.g. on a walk where there are other dogs around). After briefly observing the dog and discussing with the owner the primary training needs, I then have a non-verbal conversation with the dog while on a short walk with a leash. This non-verbal conversation serves three main purposes: (1) I am better able to assess the dog's behavioral habits; (2) I begin to gain the dog's attention and trust; (3) I am able to determine a training plan specifically for that dog. I then utilize the remainder of the session to instruct the owner(s) how to use my techniques to improve the bond with their dog, to gain better control of their dog, and to enhance communication with their dog. These techniques are optimized when the owner(s) does their homework - consistently practicing the fundamentals I teach.
Subsequent sessions build on the foundation of the initial session as described above. Sometimes we have to go back to the basics because dogs learn in steps with with consistency and positive reinforcement.
The number of sessions ultimately depends on you. It may take more than one session to establish and maintain desired habits in your dog. It may take more than one session if you decide to build your dog's education beyond basic obedience. It may take more than one session if there are multiple issues that both you and your dog need to learn to correct together. I do not pressure owners into multiple sessions. I recommend follow-up sessions if I recognize an unwanted behavior that is more complicated or challenging to address in one session alone. Every dog and owner-dog dynamic is different, so I assess the situation on a case-by-case basis.
How much do you charge for a session?
A session at your home starts at $70.00 plus tax, per dog, in central Albuquerque. The charge increases incrementally for sessions taking place at a location beyond 15 miles one-way from my place of business. If we schedule a training session at McDuffie Park or Del Sol Park, the fee is $65.00 plus tax, per dog.
What kind of training do you provide?
I provide practical, customized, obedience training and behavior correction. This includes teaching the owner(s) the basic techniques I use to maintain control and correct unwanted behavior using a leash.
Obedience training includes leash techniques consisting of heel, sit, and stay. Behavior correction is built upon obedience training, beginning with leash techniques and control exercises. I have extensive experience working with dogs that have separation anxiety, aggression towards other dogs, and aggression towards people. I have helped many owners to be able to walk their dogs without tension.
Often, I'm asked to assist owners with their dog whose poor behavior was not remedied in other training environments. I have a proven track record with many satisfied clients.
When is it too early to start training my puppy?
It is never too early to start teaching a puppy basic obedience and healthy boundaries.
